Elazığ City Hospital saves 3.7 mn units of electricity and reduces the carbon footprint

Elazig City Hospital, one of the most prominent hospitals in Turkey, is spread on an area of 3,47,500 m2 in the central district of Elazığ. The facility comprises of two hospitals and a clinic with a capacity of 1,038 beds providing services to the district and neighbouring provinces.

 Implemented by the Ministry of Health, Turkey, Elazig City Hospital is one of the largest projects in Turkey’s health sector. Equipped with world-class cutting-edge isolators, the Elazığ City Hospital can seamlessly carry out all its operations, even during and after the most severe earthquake scenarios, making it the world’s largest earthquake-resistant hospital.

Elazig City Hospital is an aid to the city and has also been equally responsible towards the environment. The hospital saves 3.7 million units of electricity and reduces carbon emissions by 3,450 tonnes annually. This is also equal to planting 3,55,000 trees or taking 725 cars off the road. Elazig City Hospital achieves its energy savings and contributes to the environment by choosing the most energy-efficient solutions from Thermax for their heating and cooling requirements.

Thermax’s two exhaust gas fired chiller-heaters of 350 TR each at Elazig is utilising the waste heat of exhaust coming from gas engines (2.5 MW) to heat and cool water. The hot water is used for sanitation purpose and sterilisation of medical equipment. Also, hot and chilled water is used for comfort cooling and comfort heating for seasonal requirements.

Thermax Absorption Cooling and Heating division was conferred with the “LOW CARBON HERO” award for Elazig City Hospital installation, constituted by the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SPCA), at Istanbul Turkey. SPCA with the “Low Carbon Hero Award” aims to support the ones achieving perfection in low carbon economy in production and consumption, thus increasing awareness in the society.
